We Remember and Honor on this Memorial Day

In the United States, today marks a somber day, Memorial Day. Memorial Day began as Decoration Day three years after the Civil War ended to decorate the graves of the Union veterans with flowers and the first large observance was at Arlington National Cemetery. Over the years, tributes continued to take place throughout the states, honoring Civil War veterans. After World War I, the day was expanded to honor all those who have died in American Wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress.

Here are a few ways you can honor the fallen on Memorial Day this year:

A minute of silence
The National Moment of Remembrance “encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation” according to the Veterans Administration.

Reflection when raising your flag
When I put my flag out today, I was overwhelmed with emotion. It’s a very special time, even more so given all the events of 2020, to take a few extra minutes to reflect on my gratitude for all of those that have put their lives on the line for the protection of my country. I plan to take a few extra minutes when I take it down to be mindful of their sacrifice as well.

Visit a National Cemetery - in person or virtually

One of their ideas is to learn about Gold Star Families, which is the designation reserved for families of military members who have died in the line of duty.
