Together in Pride

We're Together in Pride here at TTEC as we head into Pride Month, an annual observance dedicated to raising awareness and promoting acceptance, equality, and self-affirmation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals. It is celebrated in the month of June to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising, a pivotal event that took place in June 1969 in New York City, New York in the United States. The Stonewall Uprising marked a turning point in the LGBTQ+ rights movement and inspired the formation of numerous LGBTQ+ organizations around the world.
As we join together this month, we wanted to share a bit of history about Pride and how we can all become allies not just in June, but beyond.
History of Pride
The history of Pride Month is rooted in the activism and courage of LGBTQ+ individuals who fought against discrimination and social injustice. The Stonewall Uprising, led predominantly by transgender women of color, ignited a series of protests and demonstrations that galvanized the LGBTQ+ community and their allies to demand equal rights, decriminalization, and an end to police harassment.
Since then, Pride parades, events, and celebrations have become an annual tradition worldwide. They serve as a platform to raise awareness, celebrate diversity, and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. Pride Month reminds us of the progress made, while highlighting the ongoing work required to create a more inclusive and accepting society for all.
How to Become an Ally
Being an ally means actively supporting and advocating for the LGBTQ+ community, even if you do not identify as LGBTQ+ yourself. Here are some ways you can become a better ally:
- Educate Yourself: Take the time to learn about LGBTQ+ history, terminology, and the issues that affect the community. Read books, watch documentaries, and engage in conversations that deepen your understanding.
- Listen and Amplify: Actively listen to the experiences and voices of LGBTQ+ individuals. Use your privilege to amplify their stories and perspectives, ensuring that their voices are heard and valued.
- Respect Pronouns and Identities: Respect and use people's preferred pronouns and gender identities. This helps create a safer and more inclusive environment.
- Challenge Stereotypes: Challenge stereotypes and biases, both within yourself and in your community. Stand up against homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of discrimination whenever you encounter them.
- Support LGBTQ+ Organizations: Donate your time, resources, or funds to LGBTQ+ organizations that are working to advocate for equality, provide support, and empower individuals within the community.
- Be an Active Ally: Attend Pride events, participate in LGBTQ+ campaigns, and use your platform to promote inclusivity. Show your support not just during Pride Month but throughout the year.
Together, as allies and members of a diverse society, we can create a world where everyone feels accepted, valued, and loved for who they are.
